Masters of Photography: Irving Penn

Masters of Photography: Irving Penn.

Let’s meet Irving Penn, one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. American master of portraiture, still life, beauty, and fashion photography was born 100 years ago. Trained to become a painter, Penn bought his first Rolleiflex camera when he was 21 with the money he earned from his drawings. He was soon hired by famous Vogue Art Director, Alexander Liberman, as his assistant and then began his 66-year long career with the magazine. Today, Penn with his 165 Vogue covers under his belt is considered the magazine’s legend.

Together we will explore Penn’s legacy through his most important photographs from his 70-year long photography career. We will dive into a big Q: Was Penn a visionary artist or was he just a crafty photographer?
Our special guests include: Pablo Picasso, Marlena Dietrich, Truman Capote, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Balthus, Miles Davies, Al Pacino, Leonard Cohen, Audrey Hepburn, and you.
We will fly to New York, Peru, New Guinea, Morocco, Dahomey, and Paris.
